College Admission Essay: “Self-Reliance?”

COLLEGE ADMISSION ESSAY, FOR LAUGHS

Excerpt:

My reading of “Self-Reliance” was the equivalent of Neo being told that his world was a false reality. I was able to open my eyes as well as eat my fear of rejection. In order to truly ascribe to Emerson’s idea of self-reliance, I would be forced break my dependence on social media. If the Internet, like Emerson’s “dead church and dead Bible society” produces nothing of original artistic merit, if it encourages “sameness” and discourages self-reliance, it must be abandoned. I would have to cancel my cell phone. I would have to sever my ties to the online community. Have I had the courage? No not at present. And yet, throughout this passionate and accusatory reaction to Emerson’s Self Reliance, I have now found peace in expressing my original thoughts and ideas. This is a step toward building a new future where all aspects of originality are revered and not commercialized. The dream is finalized and stated. While you may disagree step back and evaluate your thoughts and opinions and see if you can truly call them your own. The world, which pretends to embrace non-conformity through social networking, will indeed “whip you with displeasure”, for a high school girl without a cell phone, MySpace page, or Facebook account does indeed stand apart and alone.
